Our Aims

The aims of Nottinghamshire Women’s Aid Ltd are summed up in our mission statement:

“Nottinghamshire Women’s Aid Ltd exists for the benefit of all women, young people and children experiencing physical, mental or sexual abuse in their relationships. We offer information, advice, and access to (temporary) accommodation, ongoing support and aftercare.
Nottinghamshire Women’s Aid Ltd recognises that violence against women results from the unequal position of women in society. We are opposed to all forms of emotional and physical violence and abuse against women, young people and children. We are committed to the principle of self-help and self-determination and encourage and empower women seeking advice, information, support or refuge to determine their own future.”

Our History

In 1984 a group of women saw the need for a Refuge in Bassetlaw for Women, Young People and Children who were fleeing domestic abuse and formed an organisation known as Bassetlaw Women’s Aid Limited.

2003 saw a change in structure from a collective to linear management and in 2006 after consultation with its member’s Bassetlaw Women’s Aid Limited changed its name to Nottinghamshire Women’s Aid Limited.

Initially the organisation’s aims were to meet the immediate needs of Women, Young People and Children by providing support and a temporary place of safety in the Refuge but over the years the organisation has grown and developed services in response to need providing a range of support and accommodation services.

Nottinghamshire Women’s Aid now offers the following services:-

  • Domestic Abuse Support service
  • Intervention and Recovery Services
  • Children’s & Young Peoples Domestic Abuse Support
  • Independent Domestic Violence Advocate Service
  • Refuge Support Services
  • The Farr Centre – Supporting Women, Young People and Children

Nottinghamshire Women’s Aid Limited is a Registered Charity and a Company Limited by Guarantee governed by a board of trustees.
